University physician leaders were the second highest earners in the state after university coaches, according to a Baltimore Sun report.
A Baltimore Sun analysis found that university physicians in leadership positions accounted for six of the ten top earners in Maryland. The University of Maryland's vice president for medical affairs and dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine was the fourth highest earner at $757,489. The chief of surgery at the university's medical center, also the chairman of the department of surgery at the School of Medicine, earned $737,243. The chief of cardiac surgery and cardiothoracic transplantation at the center earned $703,175.
Donald F. Norris, a political scientist, said university leaders earn among the highest salaries because of market demands: A university needs to pay its leaders enough to stay competitive.
