University Medical Center of El Paso (Texas) President and CEO Jim Valenti, along with other hospital executives, were recently awarded bonuses, just months after layoffs occurred at the hospital, according to an El Paso Times report.
Mr. Valenti's bonus, which was awarded by the hospital board, was $120,000, and UMC executives' bonuses, given by Mr. Valenti, totaled $180,000, according to the report.
According to the report, Mr. Valenti has supported the bonuses, saying that he and board leaders always intended to pay the amounts while steep budget cuts happened this summer, including more than 50 layoffs.
But Mr. Valenti sent an email in August stating "there were no bonuses paid in 2014 and we expect no bonuses through this year," according to the report.
UMC Board Chairman William Hanson told the El Paso Times it is necessary board members talk to Mr. Valenti in regard to the communication before any action is taken.
