Few bonuses were paid to executives at some of the country's largest for-profit health systems in 2022 as hospital margins plummeted due to labor challenges, declining patient volumes, inflation and the rising costs of medical products.
The CEOs and CFOs of HCA Healthcare, Tenet Healthcare, Universal Health Services and Community Health Systems all saw their compensation packages drop substantially compared to 2021, according to proxy statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
However, the CEOs of the four for-profit systems earned compensation packages of more than $43 million combined in 2022, down from a collective $65 million in 2021. CFOs of the same four systems earned more than $16 million combined last year, down from more than $27 million in 2021.
Here’s the top three earners at each health system and how executive compensation changed over the last three years:
Note: Total compensation can include salary, bonuses, stock and option awards, change in pension value and nonqualified deferred compensation earnings and other compensation.
