Health IT is one of the fastest growing careers in the U.S. According to the 2014 HealthITJobs.com salary survey, health IT professionals earn a mean salary of approximately $89,879, with 30 percent also receiving an average bonus of $13,100. However, there is substantial disparity between men and women's average annual salaries.
According to the survey, women's average salary is $82,036.39, $17,532.29 less than men, who average $99,568.68 per year. The survey didn't present reasons for the gender pay gap.
The survey also found the profession tends to skew toward a younger demographic of workers. Fifty-two percent of respondents were 44 years old or younger. Many health IT professionals have several years of experience, with eight years being the average.
Salary averages vary among U.S. regions. The mid-Atlantic region has the highest average salary of $105,923, and the lowest salaries are in the Midwest, with annual pay averaging around $81,255.
Certain job functions result in higher salaries than others, the survey found. The highest salaries by far are given to project managers, who earned an average of $111,648.73 last year.
