Antonio Alfonso, MD, chairman of the Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., was the second-highest paid employee on New York's payroll in 2011, according to analysis from SeeThroughNY, a project of conservative think tank Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.
Dr. Alfonso made $775,985 last year, according to the report. Steven Strongwater, MD, former CEO of Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Medical Center, was the third-highest paid state employee in 2011 with total compensation of $717,338 before resigning in November.
Alain Kaloyeros, senior vice president and CEO of the SUNY University of Albany College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering, was the highest-paid state employee in 2011, earning $792,583.
