South Carolina's Novant Health Sees Employee Complaints Over Executive Bonuses

Despite "thank you" bonuses to some of its frontline employees, Novant Health is still receiving calls, e-mails and letters from employees who are upset about the system's six-figure bonuses for executives, according to a Winston-Salem Journal report.

The top five executives of the four-hospital system, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., saw a combined $2.62 million in bonuses for 2010. This combined figure was up b y $151,713 from 2009. The figures were recently published in a Winston-Salem Journal report, spurring employee feedback.

Rank-and-file employees of Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem were recently awarded a $120 or $60 bonus, depending on how many paid hours they worked. Novant also paid a discretionary bonus of $120 to $300, depending on the employee's length of service and employment status, according to the report.

Forsyth already received backlash when it paid executive bonuses after the hospital cited financial challenges and cut 48 jobs in July.

Novant officials said the compensation of its executives must be considered reasonable and within an acceptable range compared to similar organizations, according to the report.
