Sanford Health Merger Gave Former MeritCare CEO $1M, Sanford CEO 17% Raise

After the Nov. 2009 merger of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health and MeritCare in Fargo, N.D., MeritCare President and CEO Roger Gilbertson, MD, received a separation payment of $1 million, according to an Inforum report.

Kelby Krabbenhoft, who was CEO of Sanford Health before the merger, became CEO of the post-merger Sanford Health, which is now based in both Sioux Falls, S.D., and Fargo, N.D. His total compensation the year of the merger was $1.9 million and has since increased 17 percent. This year his base salary rose to $900,000 from his 2009-2010 base of $746,924. However, his current supplemental pay and bonuses are not yet publicly available.
