U.S. medical residents in the Northwest report the highest average salaries, while those in the Southeast earn the least, according to the Medscape Residents Salary & Debt Report 2014.
Medscape surveyed more than 1,200 residents from June 20 through July 7. All participants were enrolled in U.S. medical resident programs. Variations in Medicare subsidies for graduate medical education, among other factors, could contribute to regional differences in salary, according to the report. Here is the average resident salary in each of the nine regions of the country, starting with the highest.
1. Northwest (including Alaska) — $71,000
2. Northeast — $61,000
3. West — $57,000
4. Great Lakes — $54,000
5. Mid-Atlantic — $54,000
6. South Central — $54,000
7. Southwest — $54,000
8. North central — $52,000
9. Southeast — $50,000
