Pilot Project on Physician Compensation to Receive Federal Funding

A pilot project designed to explore new ways to pay physicians may soon be funded by a $10 billion government program designed to cut $2.5 trillion in annual healthcare costs, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

The pilot project, run in part by New York-based physician Rommel Tolentino, MD, looks at giving physicians a monthly fee based on the number of patients they care for. Physicians could also receive bonuses based on decreased complications and preventable hospital visits.

The project looks to eliminate methods of compensation that "encourage excessive care," according to the report.
