Several members within the Southern Humboldt Community Healthcare District in Garberville, Calif., voiced their discontent at a public meeting after the board approved a new contract with Administrator Harry Jasper, which included a raise of $78,000, according to a Redwood Times report.
Previously, Mr. Jasper was earning $102,000 as the head of the health system, and he will now earn $180,000 with the potential to earn an additional $30,000 for meeting annual performance goals, according to the report.
People raised concerns about the large salary increase, how the increase was going to be funded and the lack of transparency throughout the process. Board members responded that Mr. Jasper had improved the district's finances and that the total salary is still lower than the average rural hospital CEO. According to the report and statistics from the California Hospital Association, salaries for rural hospital CEOs in California vary from $290,000 to $439,000.
