Top executives of New York non-profit healthcare companies earned high salaries for their work in 2010, according to a Buffalo News review of annual reports.
The highest earners were James Kaskie, CEO of Kaleida Health, who earned $2.3 million in 2010, and David Klein, CEO of Lifetime Healthcare Companies in Rochester, N.Y., who earned just over $1.91 million.
Some CEOs saw pay increases even as company earnings fell. HealthNow New York President Alphonso O'Neil-White saw a pay increase of 11 percent in 2010, bumping his salary to $1.83 million, while company surpluses fell 15 percent to $52.7 million and revenue dropped 2.3 percent to $2.4 billion over the same period. The company said the drop reflects strategic initiatives to cut costs and that Mr. O'Neil-White's pay reflects the company's 2009 performance, when surplus more than doubled.
The average CEO pay among 17 Buffalo-area hospitals was $534,189. Healthcare organizations interviewed by Buffalo News responded that high salaries are necessary to attract great talent to a CEO position, and pay is commensurate with the complexities of the positions.
