LifePoint's Bill Carpenter Earned $8.3M in 2013

Compensation for Bill Carpenter, chairman and CEO of Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals, decreased 7 percent in 2013, totaling $8.35 million, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The dip in pay mostly stemmed from lower bonuses. Mr. Carpenter received $520,000 in incentives last year, compared with almost $1.5 million in 2012. LifePoint aggressively pursued several acquisitions in 2013, but its total profit fell roughly 24 percent year-over-year. However, revenue increased 8.4 percent to $3.7 billion in 2013.

Mr. Carpenter's salary totaled $1 million, while his stock awards and stock option awards equaled $4.43 million and $2.39 million, respectively.

The second-highest-paid executive within LifePoint last year was David Dill, president and COO. He earned $4.33 million, down slightly from $4.7 million in 2012. Leif Murphy, executive vice president, chief development officer and CFO, made $3.13 million. Mr. Murphy became LifePoint's CFO last September after Jeff Sherman resigned. Mr. Sherman made $537,217, and he vested several stock options.
