Bill Carpenter, chairman and CEO of Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals, made $8.96 million in fiscal year 2012 — a 16 percent increase from $7.73 million he earned in 2011, according to a proxy disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Mr. Carpenter's compensation last year was also higher than the $8.15 million he earned in 2010. In 2012, his salary increased slightly to $978,192. Mr. Carpenter's stock and option awards both increased significantly year-over-year to $4.05 million and $2.44 million, respectively. He also earned nearly $1.5 million in bonuses and incentives last year, an increase from the $1.16 million in bonuses from 2011.
Of all the major for-profit, acute-care hospital company CEOs in the United States, Mr. Carpenter ranks fifth in overall compensation, just ahead of Gary Newsome, who leads Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates.
LifePoint CFO Jeff Sherman's compensation jumped 26 percent from 2011 to 2012, totaling $3.43 million last year. His base salary rose to $500,961, and his stock and option awards reached a combined $2.3 million. Mr. Sherman also made more than $588,000 in incentives.
President and COO David Dill was the second-highest earner at LifePoint in 2012, as his compensation hit $4.7 million, up from $3.4 million in 2011. LifePoint Chief Legal Officer Paul Gilbert's compensation totaled $2.33 million last year, and Chief Administrative Officer John Bumpus made $1.85 million. LifePoint Chief Development Officer Leif Murphy earned $2.27 million.
