Indianapolis hospital CEOs have seen little or no pay raise since 2012

Three of the "Big 4" Indianapolis hospital CEOs got little or no pay increases over the last couple years, according to an Indianapolis Star analysis of Hospital Internal Revenue Service Form 990s.

Here is how their pay and bonuses stacked up, year over year, according to the analysis.

  • Bryan Mills, president and CEO of Community Health Network,
2014 compensation (includes salary and bonus):
    $945,284 (down 13.6 percent since 2012)
  • Dan Evans, CEO of Indiana University Health, 2014 compensation (includes salary and bonus): $1.36 million (unchanged from 2012, down about 2.7 percent from 2011)
  • Robert Brody, former president and CEO of Franciscan St. Francis Health andcurrent COO of ambulatory services for Franciscan Alliance,
2014 salary (Franciscan does not award bonuses):
    $838,293 (1.1 percent increase from 2012)
  • Vincent Caponi, former CEO of St. Vincent Health and Ascension Health Ministry Market Leader for Indiana and current senior vice president of Ascension Health Alliance and executive chairman of the board for St. Vincent Health, 2013 compensation (includes salary and bonus): $2.5 million (29 percent increase over 2011)

According to the report, retirement, deferred compensation and benefits were not included in the analysis.

The tightened compensation for top executives is not due to poor financial performance of the systems. Three of the four hospital groups that have posted 2014 financial reports indicated growth in revenues and earnings in 2014, including IU Health, Community Health Network and Franciscan Alliance, according to the report. Spokespeople from both Community and IU Health said the stunted growth in executive compensation stems from new benchmarks that set the bar higher for CEO bonus payments, according to the report.
