Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health invested $138 million in its workforce and $271 million into base-pay increases and incentives in 2022, according to a report shared with Becker's April 10.
It was a big year for the health system, which combined with Advocate Aurora Health in December, forming Charlotte-based Advocate Health, the nation's fifth-largest nonprofit health system with 67 hospitals across Illinois, Wisconsin, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina.
North Carolina's nonprofit health systems have been the subject of scrutiny from the state's treasurer, Dale Folwell. In a Feb. 15 report, Mr. Folwell called their executive pay raises "the biggest transfer of wealth in our generation."
Atrium Health defends competitive pay as necessary to retain top executives in a challenging sector of the healthcare industry.
"As a nonprofit health system, we don't have the luxury of providing stock options and other typical corporate perks," Atrium said in a statement shared with Becker's. "We're proud of how our CEO and executive leadership team have continued to elevate and expand top-quality services and access, focused on providing all individuals with the opportunity to live their healthiest lives."
