Six non-profit hospitals and health systems in the Jacksonville, Fla., area awarded their CEOs an average of $628,000 in 2009, according to a Florida Times-Union report.
David Bjork, a Minneapolis-based healthcare consultant, said non-profit hospitals are expected to use their tax-exempt gains to benefit the community, not the executives. However, the "reasonable compensation" non-profits are allowed to pay under law remains unclear.
According to the report, executives' pay is based on the person's experience, education, market rate comparisons and the size and number of associates within an organization.
