8 Statistics on Family Physician Salary Based on Employment Status

Salary levels for physicians practicing family medicine varied last year for hospital-employed physicians as well as subspecialty, and family physicians who practiced sports medicine in a hospital setting had the highest earnings in 2010, according to the Medical Group Management Association's "Physician Compensation and Production Survey: 2011 Report Based on 2010 Data."

Here are the average annual compensation figures for family physicians in 2010 based on their employment status:

Family Medicine: With Obstetrics
Hospital-employed:  $202,063
Not hospital-employed:  $190,000

Family Medicine: Without Obstetrics
Hospital-employed:  $186,048
Not hospital-employed:  $195,027

Family Medicine: Ambulatory Only
Hospital-employed:  $175,530
Not hospital-employed:  $181,229

Family Medicine: Sports Medicine
Hospital-employed:  $224,593
Not hospital-employed:  $214,806
