60% of women have never negotiated pay

Three in 5 women have never asked for more pay, according to a poll conducted for Randstad US, a human resource consulting firm.

Randstad's poll includes responses from a nationally representative group of 1,213 employed people over age 18.

The results show women are less likely to have negotiated pay before, yet more likely to be looking for work elsewhere because they feel underpaid. Three key stats:

  • Sixty percent of women have never negotiated pay, compared to 48 percent of men.
  • Fifty-one percent of women are considering leaving their job because they believe they are underpaid, compared to 41 percent of men.
  • Seventy-two percent of women would take an equivalent role at another company if it paid more, compared to 59 percent of men.

As younger generations begin entering the workforce, more women may begin negotiating. The survey also indicated millennials and Gen Z employees are generally bolder and more strategic about salary negotiations than the generations before them.
