Bonuses are an increasing trend in physician compensation and physician searches, and bonuses based on relative value units are still the most prevalent, according to the Merritt Hawkins "2012 Review of Physician Recruiting Incentives."
Here are the six most common types of bonuses offered to physicians last year. Note: Multiple responses could be chosen, and the bonuses only reflect physician searches that offered salary plus a production bonus.
• RVU-based: 54 percent
• Quality: 35 percent
• Net collections: 33 percent
• Gross billings: 5 percent
• Patient encounters: 5 percent
• Other: 3 percent
*Other included timely delivery of patient records, profit sharing, discretionary bonus, administrative responsibilities and leadership stipends.
