56 hospitals, health systems raising workers' pay

The following hospitals and health systems have announced or shared plans for raising workers' pay this year.

December

1. Atrium Health, part of Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health, will increase the minimum hourly wage for its North and South Carolina employees to $18.50 an hour. The change is effective Jan. 12.

2. Members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United and hospital board members approved a new four-year labor contract between the union and Salinas Valley Health Medical Center. The contract includes 20% across-the-board pay increases over the life of the deal, according to the union.

3. Nurses at Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, Pa., part of Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare, approved a new three-year labor contract. The agreement includes overall wage increases averaging 14% over the life of the deal, according to Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals.

4. Members of SEIU 1199 New England approved a new labor contract with Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island in Providence. The contract includes 13% wage increases over two and a half years, according to the union.

November

5. Nearly 5,000 workers represented by SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West at San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare approved their first labor contract. The contract includes pay increases of up to 35% over three years, according to a joint news release.

6. Members of the New York Professional Nurses Union approved a new labor contract with their employer, New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health. The deal includes a $38 million wage package under which a majority of the membership will receive a 20% to 23% increase to their base rate over the next three years, according to the union.

7. Nurses and licensed professionals at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, Calif., approved a new labor contract that includes wage increases. Over four years, registered nurses and licensed medical professionals will see wage increases of at least 22%, according to SEIU Local 121RN. 

8. Kadlec Regional Medical Center will raise wages for 1,100 workers as part of a newly approved labor contract, according to SEIU Healthcare 1199. The three-year agreement covers service and technical healthcare workers at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Wash., and the Freestanding Emergency Room in Kennewick, Wash. Both are affiliates of Renton, Wash.-based Providence.

9. Members of SEIU Healthcare Michigan approved a new labor contract with Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Health. The agreement includes an average wage increase of 23.4% over the life of the deal, according to the union.

10. Members of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals approved a three-year labor contract with Warren (Pa.) General Hospital. The agreement includes new wage scales with overall increases of 16% over three years for nurses and technologists, according to the union.

11. UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, part of Pittsburgh-based UPMC, and union nurses have agreed to a new contract, which was approved. Under the agreement, the minimum wage for nurses with a BSN degree will be raised over three years from $31.65 to $40.25 per hour, a 31% increase, according to union representatives.

October

12. Cambridge (Mass.) Health Alliance resident physicians and fellows approved a new labor contract. Under the deal, residents and fellows will receive salary increases totaling 20.5% and about 17%, respectively, over three years, according to the Committee of Interns and Residents.

13. Members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, have approved a new labor contract with Corpus Christi (Texas) Medical Center. The agreement includes wage increases of up to 25% over three years for some nurses, according to the union.

14. Nurses at MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas have approved a new labor contract. The contract includes up to 22% wage increases for some nurses over three years, according to the National Nurses Organizing Committee.

15. Nurses at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., approved a new labor contract. The contract includes "substantial" wage increases, according to the National Nurses Organizing Committee.

16. Nurses at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan., approved a new labor contract. The contract includes "substantial" wage increases, according to the National Nurses Organizing Committee.

17. Nurses at Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley in Pleasanton, Calif., part of Stanford Health Care, approved a new labor contract. Under the deal, nurses will see wages increase by 18% over three years, according to California Nurses Association/National Nurses United.

18. Staff from Rio Rancho-based University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center approved a new labor contract. The contract includes a 3% wage increase, effective Oct. 13, according to the United Health Professionals of New Mexico.

19. Nurses at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C., approved a new labor contract. The agreement includes up to 29% wage increases for some nurses over three years, according to National Nurses United.

September

20. Nurses at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, represented by SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, approved a new labor contract with hospital management. The three-year agreement, announced on the union's Facebook page, includes an average pay raise of 24% by the end of the contract and features a commitment to reducing rotating day/night shifts.

21. The 4,000 nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston approved a new labor contract. The agreement includes a 20% to 30% wage increase over two and a half years, depending on where nurses are on the wage scale, according to the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

22. Nurses and hospital workers represented by SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania approved a new three-year contract with Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, Pa. The agreement provides an average 16% investment in pay and compensation, with some union members receiving as much as 36%, according to a union news release shared with Becker's. By the contract's end, a majority of currently employed nurses will earn a minimum hourly wage of $40 and all currently employed healthcare workers (e.g. patient care techs, housekeepers, dietary staff, transporters) will earn a minimum hourly wage of $20.

August

23. About 700 resident physicians and fellows at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque will receive a 5% salary increase. The Committee of Interns and Residents, a local chapter of the Service Employees International Union, and administration amended their existing labor contract to allow for the raise.

24. Employees at Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico Hospital's campuses will receive raises as the hospital obtains increased Medicaid reimbursement. The 3% general wage increase affects employees who work at the hospital's campus in Albuquerque and the hospital's clinics. It also affects many employees who work at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho, N.M.

25. Members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United approved a new labor contract with Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, Calif., part of the Providence system, based in Renton, Wash. The contract includes a 4.5% across-the-board wage increase over the life of the contract, in addition to step increases.

26. Resident physicians and fellows at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, Calif., approved a new labor agreement with hospital management. The agreement includes a 30% increase in compensation for incoming residents over three years.

27. Members of National Nurses United at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital in St. Louis approved a new labor contract. The deal includes an average wage increase of 17% over three years, with a maximum raise of 40%.

28. A wage review at Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Health resulted in increases for a number of surgical techs. The review resulted in 117 of 131 surgical techs receiving increases ranging from 0.2% to 20%, averaging 11%.

July

29. Some California hospitals have started raising workers' pay amid a delayed start of the state's minimum wage increases for healthcare workers. For example, Oakland-based University of California also announced in May that it would begin increasing minimum hourly wages for healthcare workers beginning June 1. The minimum wage law, which will gradually raise the minimum wage for healthcare workers to $25 per hour through a series of annual increases, is delayed until at least October.

30. ChristianaCare, a three-hospital health system based in Wilmington, Del., is increasing its hourly minimum wage from $15 to $16.50. The change will affect about 850 employees who were below or near $16.50 per hour, according to a July 23 health system news release. ChristianaCare employs about 14,000 workers in total.

31. Nurses at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio, who are represented by the Ohio Nurses Association, approved a new three-year labor contract. The contract includes wage scale improvements, according to the union.

32. Members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers, who went on strike twice over the past year at the Sutter Center for Psychiatry in Sacramento, Calif., approved their first labor contract. Under the deal, workers will receive an average raise of 12.5% over 18 months, according to NUHW.

June

33. Workers at Hackensack Meridian Health's North Bergen, N.J.-based Palisades Medical Center approved a new labor contract. The contract includes 9% to 15% wage increases over three years, according to their union, Health Professionals & Allied Employees.

34. Registered nurses at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, Mich., who are represented by Teamsters Local 332, approved a new labor contract. The one-year agreement includes 4.25% to 39.54% wage increases based on licensure year, staffing bonuses for picking up shifts, and ratification bonuses.

May

35. Members of Fox Chase RNs and Techs United, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, approved their first union contracts. The contracts cover 400 nurses and 135 technical specialists at Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center, part of the Temple University Health System, according to the union. They include across-the-board wage increases of at least 3.25% in year one, 3% in year two, and 3% in year three, in addition to pay bumps based on experience. 

36. Hagerstown, Md.-based Meritus Health will raise its minimum wage to $20 per hour over the next two years. This investment will be a multiphased approach, with the first phase of the increases beginning July 1 and affecting 500 front-line workers, including medical assistants, certified nursing assistants, phlebotomists and emergency department technicians, according to a May 17 health system news release. 

37. Nurses at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia approved a new three-year contract. Under the deal, full-time nurses will receive a $1,600 signing bonus; part-time and per diem nurses will receive $1,100, according to the St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children Nurses United, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals. Some nurses are seeing increases of as much as 10% over the life of the contract.

38. Members of the California Nurses Association approved a new labor contract with Washington Hospital Healthcare System in Fremont, Calif. The new deal includes a 22.5% across-the-board increase in wages over four years, according to the union.

39. Members of unions affiliated with the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals approved contracts with Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa. The contract for registered nurses and certified registered nurse anesthetists includes 16% wage increases over three years, according to the union. The contract for licensed practical nurses, technicians and degreed professionals (including pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and chaplains, among others) includes average across-the-board wage increases of 11% over three years.

April

40. Members of Jeanes Nurses United approved a new labor contract with Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus in Philadelphia. The agreement includes across-the-board pay increases of at least 9% over three years, in addition to pay increases based on years of experience, according to the union.

41. Members of the Montana Nurses Association Local 17 approved a new labor contract with Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. "The contract, which runs through [the] end of February 2027, has many enhancements, and reflects the hospital's commitment to ensuring an exceptional workplace for our caregivers and includes market competitive wages, professional growth opportunities, and a safe and respectful work environment," a hospital statement said.

42. More than 1,400 healthcare workers at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Wash., and MultiCare Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley, Wash., who are represented by SEIU Healthcare 1199NW, approved a new labor contract. Beginning at ratification and continuing through December 2025, union members will see across-the-board wage increases and market adjustments, in addition to annual wage step increases, according to the union.

March

43. Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network is raising its minimum wage to $18 per hour. The raise will affect AHN staff earning at or near the network's current minimum hourly wage of $16 per hour, according to a March 15 news release from the health system.

44. Members of JNESO District Council 1 approved a new labor contract with Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua Health. The agreement includes across-the-board pay increases of up to 16% over three years, according to JNESO District Council 1, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO representing more than 5,000 nurses, technicians and other healthcare workers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. 

45. Members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, approved a new labor contract with UChicago Medicine. The agreement includes significant across-the-board wage increases, from 20% up to 40% over four years, according to the union.

46. Ballad Health is increasing pay rates for nursing staff at hospitals across the organization. The pay increases will begin April 7, according to information from the Johnson City, Tenn.-based health system.

47. Members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas, approved a new labor contract. The agreement includes an average compensation increase of more than 11%, with some receiving as much as a 25.9% increase, over three years, according to the union.

48. Members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, at Ascension Borgess Allegan (Mich.) Hospital approved a new labor contract. The agreement includes an average raise of 26% over three years, with some nurses set to receive raises above 30%, according to the union.

January and February

49. Members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association at Newburyport, Mass.-based Beth Israel Lahey Anna Jaques Hospital approved a new three-year contract. The agreement includes wage increases ranging from 10.5% to 65% in the first 12 months of the contract, according to the union.

50. Nurses represented by United Food and Commercial Workers 3000 approved a new labor contract with Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (Wash.). The agreement includes pay increases and ratification bonuses, according to the union.

51. Members of the New York State Nurses Association at Northwell Health's Long Island Jewish Valley Stream (N.Y.) approved a new three-year labor contract. The agreement includes average wage increases of 19.3% to the base registered nurse rate over the life of the deal, with additional pay depending on experience, according to the union.

52. Members of the New York State Nurses Association at Northwell Health's Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, N.Y., approved a new three-year labor contract. The agreement includes average wage increases of 18% to 20% over the life of the contract, depending on experience and job title.

53. Members of the Michigan Nurses Association at ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital in Adrian approved their tentative agreement for a new contract. The contract includes a new pay scale that reaches more than $50 per hour by the end of the three-year deal, according to the union.

54. Employees across University of New Mexico Hospital campuses will receive retention bonuses and wage increases, marking their first raises in more than a year. UNM hospital employees in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties will receive a $600 retention incentive and an average wage increase of about 3%, according to a Jan. 26 news release from the Albuquerque-based health system.

55. Members of SEIU 121RN approved a new labor contract with Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare. The deal includes cumulative across-the-board wage increases of 17.6% over three years, according to the union.

56. Members of the New York State Nurses Association at Montefiore Mount Vernon (N.Y.) and Montefiore New Rochelle (N.Y.) hospitals approved new three-year labor contracts. A union news release said the contracts, approved Dec. 28 and 29, respectively, include "historic wage increases that bring these Montefiore nurses in line with pay standards of the Montefiore Bronx facilities and improvements in working conditions, including strengthened safe staffing enforcement language."
