For 2013, the median base salary for independent health system CEOs is roughly $750,000, while the median independent hospital CEO salary is roughly half that at $380,000.
The data come from the 2013 National Healthcare Leadership Compensation Survey, conducted by Integrated Healthcare Strategies and co-sponsored by the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration.
Baseline statistics from the survey are consistent with a recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine. That study said the average nonprofit hospital CEO earned $600,000 annual, although the median compensation was $405,000.
Here are 16 statistics from the survey on salary and total cash compensation for hospital and health system CEOs. Note: Data is based on more than 1,350 participating hospitals and health systems and 839 CEO respondents. Compensation figures are effective Feb. 1, 2013.
