A growing number of U.S. states and cities are banning employers from asking applicants about their salary history to encourage pay equity between male and female employees, according to a Bloomberg BNA report.
The ban aims to reduce historical pay discrimination for women and minorities, reasoning if an employee's future pay is determined by their past salary, underpaid employees will never be able to catch up to their higher-paid peers.
Here are 11 U.S. states and cities banning the salary question, listed alphabetically.
