Oncologists are among the highest-earning physicians, especially within hospitals and healthcare organizations, according to Medscape's 2011 Physician Compensation Survey.

Here are 10 statistics on oncologist compensation for 2011:

•    Median annual compensation of all oncologists:  $285,000
•    Median annual compensation of hospital oncologists:  $375,000
•    Percentage of oncologists who made $500,000 or more:  14 percent
•    Percentage of oncologists who made $100,000 or less:  9 percent
•    Median annual compensation of male oncologists:  $320,000
•    Median annual compensation of female oncologists:  $225,000
•    Highest-paying region:  North Central ($425,000)
•    Lowest-paying region:  Northeast ($231,000)
•    Percentage of employed oncologists who feel fairly compensated:  55 percent
•    Percentage of oncologists who saw little or no change in compensation last year:  50 percent
