HHS has awarded more than $971 million to improve preparedness and health outcomes for public health threats, according to a recent news release from the federal agency.
For the first time, federal hospital preparedness and public health preparedness funds are being awarded jointly, a move intended to "encourage cooperation between the nation's healthcare and public health systems," according to HHS.
HHS has awarded $352 million for the Hospital Preparedness Program cooperative agreement and more than $619 million for the Public Health Emergency Preparedness cooperative agreement, according to the agency.
"Having systems in place to provide better treatment for disaster survivors and improved public health for our communities leads to better health outcomes on a day-to-day basis," HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Nicole Lurie, MD, said in a statement.
