University of Alabama launches statewide genomic analysis project

The University of Alabama at Birmingham and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology have launched the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative, a statewide project to identify and study those at risk for genetic disease.

The project, which is funded by a $2 million appropriation from the Alabama legislature to UAB, plans to recruit 2,000 participants in its first year, encompassing every county in the state. Over a five-year period, UAB plans to increase the research database to include genetic information from more than 10,000 participants.

The participants will undergo genomic analysis based on a DNA sample. The results, which will be shared with the participants, may identify genetic biomarkers associated with risk for diseases such as breast or ovarian cancer. These participants will receive genetic counseling and referral to appropriate medical care.

"This project will result in immediate health benefits to some participants, and in the long term will help to address problems of chronic disease and rising healthcare costs in the state," said Bruce R. Korf, MD, PhD, chair of the department of genetics at UAB and co-director of the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative. "It will also position Alabama as a leader at the forefront of 21st century medicine."
