Illinois hospital remains open after kitchen fire

Smoke from a kitchen fire filled Peoria, Ill.-based UnityPoint Health-Proctor hospital Oct. 13, but no injuries were reported, according to the Peoria Journal Star

The Peoria Fire Department sent 24 firefighters to the scene. By the time they arrived, the fire was mostly out, but the hospital was filled with heavy smoke.

"On the first floor, you couldn't even see 10 feet in front of you," Battalion Chief Steve Rada told the Journal Star

Patients and staff were told to shelter in place while firefighters spent more than an hour ventilating the hospital.

The hospital remains open. Sara Allen, a UnityPoint spokesperson, said the fire was "confined to an area of the kitchen with minimal disruption to patient care and no injuries. While the cafeteria is currently closed to visitors, there are no disruptions to patient meal services."
