Paris-based pharmaceutical company Sanofi SA and Google's life sciences team announced a partnership to collect, analyze and understand data on diabetes, according to Reuters.
According to data cited in the report from the International Diabetes Federation, this disease is expected to affect 592 million people in the next 20 years.
Though sales in Sanofi's diabetes product line have taken a hit from pricing pressure in the U.S., it has contributed to one-fifth, or $2.13 billion, of the company's total sales in the second quarter of this year, according to the report.
Google is already working with Novartis AG, a Swiss drug company, to create contact lenses for diabetics that track blood glucose levels and help eyes focus, according to the report.
