Cleveland hospital psychiatric ER at risk following other department closures

Cleveland-based St. Vincent Charity Medical Center may close the city's only psychiatric ER following its announcement that it will end medical ER and inpatient services in November, Ideastream Public Media reported Sept. 19.

The hospital is awaiting approval of $3.8 million from the Alcohol Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County. The psychiatric facility received a similar amount for operations in 2021 and 2022.

"We're in conversations with St. Vincent now," Scott Osiecki, the mental services board's CEO, told the publication. "They're looking into if they would be able to operate a standalone psychiatric emergency department, one that isn't connected to a hospital. But there's federal rules and regulations about that."
