Cleveland Clinic affiliates to improve diabetes, obesity research

The Cleveland Clinic Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute forged its first affiliation — with Tradition, Miss.-based National Diabetes & Obesity Research Institute.

The affiliation aims to improve health in Mississippi and across the country by enhancing diabetes and obesity research to find better treatment methods. Once it is fully implemented, it will bolster care for NDORI patients and provide Mississippi's health systems with resources to treat the disease.

"I am delighted to announce this groundbreaking affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute. Their extensive expertise in diabetes, obesity and endocrinology research is an essential element in establishing NDORI as the preeminent diabetes and obesity research center in the U.S.," Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) said in a statement. "Diabetes and prediabetes affects over 1 million people in the state of Mississippi, almost a third of our population, so there is no greater place to conduct this groundbreaking research."

NDORI was founded by a real estate developer and philanthropist, Joseph Canizaro, who has type 2 diabetes himself.
