Amazon donated $8 million total in Seattle and Arlington, Va., to help increase affordable housing units for homeless people in its two headquarter cities. The tech giant will also match employee donations to 20 select charities for housing and homelessness through Sept. 30.
Of the $8 million in funding, $5 million will go to Plymouth Housing in Seattle, which pairs people with permanent homes and services for physical disabilities, mental health and substance use disorder. An additional $3 million will go to the Arlington Community Foundation, which is an endowment with focus areas that include homelessness prevention, education, arts, youth and families in need.
"Homelessness and affordable housing are real concerns in Seattle and the Washington, D.C., region — as neighbors in both, we made these donations to Plymouth Housing and the Arlington Community Foundation because of their work and progress on housing stability and helping families improve their quality of life," Jay Carney, senior vice president of global corporate affairs at Amazon, said in a press release. "We believe this gift can help offer additional housing and support services for our neighbors in need."
