States with the fewest, most cardiologists per capita

Idaho is the state with the fewest cardiologists per capita, with 93 practicing physicians in that specialty. 

KFF used state licensing information from Redi-Data to determine the number of active physicians by specialty as of May. Becker's used KFF and census data to determine the number of cardiologists per capita in every state and Washington, D.C. The Census Bureau population estimates are as of July 1, 2023. 

Idaho was also the state with the fewest cardiologists per capita at the time of Becker's previous reporting.

The District of Columbia has the most cardiologists per capita as of July, with 230.

Nearly 50% of all U.S. counties do not have a single practicing cardiologist.

Idaho: 4.73

Wyoming: 4.97

Nevada: 5.26

South Dakota: 5.66

Alaska: 5.86

North Dakota: 6.25

Oklahoma: 6.32

Washington: 6.32

Mississippi: 6.50

Hawaii: 6.69

Massachusetts: 22.92

Connecticut: 17.47

New York: 16.29

Pennsylvania: 15.77

Maryland: 14.32

New Jersey: 13.91

Ohio: 13.41
