Mayo Clinic uses AI stethoscope to detect pregnancy-related heart failure

An AI-enabled stethoscope identified heart failure in two times as many pregnant patients when compared to traditional screening, according to a study published Sept. 2 in Nature Medicine.

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic researchers conducted a study of 1,195 pregnant patients at six hospitals in Nigeria. Nigerian women experience pregnancy-related heart failure more than anywhere in the world, according to a Sept. 3 news release from Mayo Clinic.

Of the 1,195 patients, 587 were screened with the AI-enabled stethoscope and 608 were screened with usual methods between August 2022 and September 2023, with follow-up occurring through May.

Twice as many pregnancy-related heart conditions, with the potential for heart failure, were detected with the AI-enabled stethoscope, according to the study.

The findings of the study were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress. Read about four of the latest cardiology care guideline updates presented at the congress here.
