Hospitals with highest, lowest 30-day mortality rates for heart attack patients

New York City-based NYU Langone hospital had the lowest 30-day mortality rate for heart attack patients in the U.S. between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2023, according to CMS data released July 31.

CMS calculates mortality rates based on deaths within 30 days of a patient being admitted to the hospital for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke and coronary artery bypass grafts. Lower mortality rates are considered more favorable than higher mortality rates. 

Here are the hospitals with the highest and lowest 30-day mortality rates for heart attack patients:

Lowest:

  1. NYU Langone Hospitals (New York City): 7.7

  2. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles) and Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester (Minn.): 8.6

  3. Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah): 8.8

  4. Stanford (Calif.) Health Care : 9

  5. Medstar Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center: 9.1

  6. VA San Diego Healthcare System: 9.2

  7. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla (Calif.), New York-Presbyterian Hospital (New York City), George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center (Salt Lake City) and Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - Plano (Texas): 9.5

  8. Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston) and Duke University Hospital (Durham, N.C.): 9.6

  9. University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center (Upper Marlboro) and Fairview Hospital (Cleveland): 9.7
