Duke Health launches cardiology AI testing lab

The healthcare field is facing a deluge of potential artificial intelligence products, and Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health has opened an AI testing lab to determine which products are the most effective for heart care.

"The goal is to test these products to ensure they are effective for their intended use, are utilized by clinicians and patients, and lead to better outcomes," Manesh Patel, MD, chief of the division of cardiology and the division of clinical pharmacology at Duke, told Becker's. "This collaboration allows us to test AI tools in real-world applications, applying observational principles and randomization […] akin to how drugs or devices are evaluated."

From tools that encourage patients to exercise or take medications to AI tools that can predict lethal heart rhythms, the clinical AI testing lab will test it all. The program, housed in Duke's heart center, is a joint effort between clinicians and data scientists.

"Large health systems can leverage their resources, including clinicians who want to be part of the team, to automate and improve frontline care. This is our goal.," Dr. Patel said.

Three projects are already underway, although Dr. Patel said he could not share details to preserve the integrity of the studies.
