Cardiologist killed in biking accident

A Nebraska cardiologist was struck and killed by a vehicle Sept. 10 while cycling, NBC affiliate WOWT reported.

Police responded to the scene at 10:15 a.m., where they found a bicyclist, Matthew Latacha, MD, who had been struck by a vehicle. Medics attempted lifesaving efforts, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Dr. Latacha was a cardiologist at Omaha-based Methodist Health System. He had worked at the hospital since 2009 and recently completed his 1,000th procedure.

"Dr. Latacha has held multiple leadership roles and championed many new procedures for the health system – most notably the Watchman," the hospital said in a statement to WOWT. "He and the team recently completed their 1,000th procedure – something which made him very proud. He was well respected, admired and loved by patients, colleagues and staff. Our prayers go out to his wife Kim and their children."
