West Maui Hospital to open in Hawaii: 5 things to know

Construction at West Maui (Hawaii) Hospital is underway after a groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday morning, according to a Maui Now report.

Here are five things to know about the project.

1. The 53,000-square-foot West Maui Hospital and Medical Center campus will feature a 25-bed critical access hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, three operating rooms, a radiology department and 24-hour pharmacy and laboratory; a 40-bed skilled nursing facility; a 40-unit assisted living facility; and two medical office buildings, according to the report. A drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility is also part of long-term plans for the campus.

2. The estimated cost for the project is $70 million for on and offsite infrastructure and construction of the hospital, nursing and assisted living facilities.

3. The hospital, nursing and assisted living facilities are expected to bring more than 150 jobs to West Maui.

4. The hospital is expected to open in late 2018.

5. Once the hospital does open, it will be the first new hospital to be built in Maui since Maui Memorial Medical Center opened in the 1950s, according to the report.
