WellSpan Health to invest $30M in behavioral health services

York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health plans to invest $30 million in two projects to expand access to patients seeking essential care.

According to a Sept. 29 news release, the investment will focus on the Mt. Gretna, Pa.-based WellSpan Philhaven campus and WellSpan York (Pa.) Hospital campus.

Renovations at the WellSpan Philhaven campus include expanding the adult inpatient unit and relocating some outpatient offices. The expansion project is expected to be completed in early 2023 and expand the hospital's capacity by 24 inpatient beds.

Upgrade plans call for WellSpan York Hospital's behavioral health unit to be renovated to provide care teams and patients with a modernized, state-of-the-art environment. The unit will offer acute, medical, sub-acute and step-down pods; dedicated serenity spaces; and seclusion spaces, as well as private and group therapy spaces, according to the release.

Mantha Kotsalos, interim president for WellSpan Philhaven, said expanding access to care underscores the organizational promise to address the region's challenges.

"It is no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with a nationwide shortage of healthcare professionals has created a mental health crisis, but it is one we will face head on with the resources of one of the largest behavioral health programs in the country," said Mr. Kotsalos.
