Salem, Va.-based LewisGale Medical Center has begun construction on its neonatal intensive care unit, CBS affiliate WDBJ reported Oct. 25.
The hospital has been planning the project for 12 years. It currently has no neonatal services. State officials pushed for construction, according to the news outlet.
The new unit will feature six bassinets with room for expansion. It is expected to cost $2.5 million.
Construction is slated to wrap by July 2023.
