San Francisco-based UCSF Health is expanding its collaboration with Hawai'i Pacific Health and Hilo (Hawaii) Medical Center after the two received a combined $150 million donation.
The donation, provided by Lynne and Marc Benioff, aims to increase Hawaii resident healthcare access through improving facilities and infrastructure, addressing care gaps, and strengthening the state's healthcare safety net, according to a March 5 UCSF news release.
Mr. Benioff is CEO of Salesforce, a cloud-based software company.
"As part of its vision, the contribution calls upon the hospitals to expand the existing specialty care relationship between UCSF Health and Hawai'i Pacific Health," the release said. "UCSF also will work with the hospital systems to support other specialty areas in the future to help meet Hawaii's needs."
Hawai'i Pacific Health received $100 million from the donation as part of a renovation project for its Honolulu-based Straub Medical Center, which will triple the facility's size. The center will be renamed the Straub Benioff Medical Center.
The donation also provided $50 million to Hilo Medical Center, which matched an additional $50 million provided by the state.
The Hilo project will include a new birthing center, intensive care unit, neurosurgery and behavioral health services. The funding will also go to physician recruitment for the facility, which will be renamed the Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
Honolulu-based Hawai'i Pacific Health is a nonprofit healthcare system that comprises four medical centers.
Hilo Medical Center has 166 acute care beds and 45 long-term care beds. It has 1,500 employees, including 250 physicians, physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses across 33 specialties, according to its website.
