Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude Children's Research Hospital unveiled a 45,000-square-foot common area funded through a $50 million donation from biopharmaceutical company AbbVie.
The area is clinician-free and is designed to allow families to relax between appointments.
The Family Commons area is set to officially open Feb. 7 and includes reading rooms, private rooms, classrooms, sacred spaces for prayer and meditation, and outdoor play areas, according to a Jan. 23 St. Jude news release.
AbbVie made the donation, which funded the design, construction and program operations of the Family Commons, in 2018.
"Family Commons will help ease this journey, offering a community respite space for patients and their families during long days at the hospital," St. Jude President and CEO James Downing, MD, said. "The first-of-its-kind floor is designed to provide a full suite of amenities to answer everything a family wants — whether it's quiet time, play time or the many needs that fall in between."
