Southside Hospital unveils $60M emergency department expansion

Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, N.Y., today unveiled its $60 million Bohlsen Family Emergency Department.

The new facility includes 94 treatment rooms tailored to various patient needs, four intake rooms for rapid assessment, a six-bed behavioral unit, a new entrance on the hospital's south side and a new helicopter landing pad. The renovation added an additional 30,000 square feet of space, tripling the size of the department, which will open to the public Sept. 13.

While the updated emergency department is equipped to handle the more than 70,000 patients Southside's emergency and trauma physicians treat every year, a second phase of the project will raise that number to 100,000 patients.

Through an additional $16 million investment, the department will expand by another 20,000 square feet to include five isolation rooms with a decontamination suite, a critical care and trauma area, a new X-ray and CT scan suite, a 16-bed clinical observation unit and a seven-bed pediatric unit.

Phase two of the expansion will be completed in November 2017.
