Sharp Chula Vista (Calif.) Medical Center broke ground on a $244 million, 197,000-square-foot hospital tower on Nov. 10.
The new tower will add 138 private patient rooms, six large operating rooms, five high-tech surgical suites, a redesigned entrance and lobby, a rooftop café with a panoramic view of San Diego and other amenities to meet the needs of the growing South County region of San Diego.
The total cost to build the new tower increased from $239 million to $244 million because the hospital received approval to add a $5 million hybrid procedure room. The project is San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare's largest single investment to date and is being funded through philanthropic donations to Sharp HealthCare Foundation, bonds, cash reserves and the Medi-Cal Hospital Fee Program.
The grand opening of the new hospital at Sharp Chula Vista is anticipated in 2019.
