Pittsburgh city council considering using American Rescue Plan funds to eliminate medical debt

Pittsburgh city council member Bobby Wilson is proposing legislation that would use American Rescue Plan Act funding to eliminate medical debt for 24,000 Pittsburgh residents, ABC affiliate WTAE reported Dec. 13.

The plan involves using $1 million in American Rescue Plan funding to eliminate $115 million in medical debt through a partnership with RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that buys back and forgives medical debt.

To qualify, residents would have to make less than four times the poverty rate and have accrued the debt during the COVID-19 pandemic.
