New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health opened the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.
Here are five things to know.
1. The hospital combines the cardiac programs at NSUH and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, N.Y., into a single facility.
2. The Heart Hospital has 700 employees, including surgeons, cardiologists, nurses and other specialists. It represents one of the state's largest cardiovascular programs, with physicians performing more than 1,500 open-heart surgeries and 3,000 cardiac interventions annually.
3. LIJ Medical Center will continue to offer interventional cardiology services at its New Hyde Park campus, but all of the hospital's cardiac surgery staff will now be a part of the Heart Hospital at NSUH.
4. The hospital houses a 22-bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit, five operating rooms and eight cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs.
5. "Unlike other cardiac programs in the region, the Heart Hospital accepts any patient, 24/7, without regard to the severity of his or her illness or socioeconomic level," said Alan Hartman, MD, senior vice president and executive director and chair of cardiothoracic surgery at Northwell Health.
