Monmouth Medical Center could spend $650M+ on 'state-of-the-art' campus

Monmouth Medical Center, part of RWJBarnabas Health, has paid about $8 million to acquire a Trinton Falls, N.J., property from the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority after more than four years of negotiations, the Asbury Park Press reported Dec. 20.

The property will be home to the Vogel Medical Campus at Tinton Falls. The first phase of construction will include a 138,000-square-foot cancer center and ambulatory care pavilion with surgical services. Plans for a second phase have not been formally outlined, but Monmouth has the discretion to base plans on market demand and the needs of the community.

MMC will create more than 300 jobs during phase one and may create a total of 1,000 jobs after completing phase two, according to the Asbury Park Press. The minimum capital investment for the project is $153.5 million but it may exceed $650 million upon completion of both phases.

"The Vogel Medical Campus will enable us to further our mission to deliver truly outstanding care to our community," Eric Carney, president and CEO of MMC and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, said in a Dec. 22 news release. "As an expansion of the MMC campuses in Long Branch and Lakewood, the Vogel Medical Campus is located within the communities we currently serve and will be designed to meet the unique needs of our diverse and growing community now and in the future."

As part of the outpatient center development at Vogel, plans for transforming the site also include the option for a new acute-care hospital if needed, according to the report. The hospital would be an expansion of MMC, and would operate in conjunction with the Long Branch, N.J., campus.

Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and was made possible by a $50 million gift from local philanthropists Sheldon and the late Anne Vogel.
