Medical University of South Carolina seeks CON to build $325M hospital

Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina is filing a certificate-of-need application with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control for the development of a new $325 million hospital.

According to a report by The Post and Courier, the new facility is expected to be constructed in Berkeley County, although exact details regarding the location have not yet been released. The new hospital will encompass 312,000 square feet and feature 128 beds.

Trident Health and Roper St. Francis, both based in Charleston, currently have approval to build facilities in Berkeley County. While Roper announced it will build a $113 million, 50-bed hospital in the county, Trident is yet to announce formal plans.

If MUSC's CON is approved, other health systems may appeal the decision, according to the report.
