From student debt relief for staff, to funding an education and conference center, here are how seven health systems are spending donations, as reported by Becker's since July 12:
1. A $15 million donation will help fund a new education and conference center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. The 30,000-square-foot Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Center will include simulation and training labs, audiovisual and remote learning equipment, a cafe and an art gallery. It will also provide space for national and international conferences.
2. Cleveland Clinic received a $13 million gift from The Howley Foundation for a program that enables high school students to explore careers in respiratory therapy, surgical technology and sterile processing. The gift supports The Howley ASPIRE Pathways program — a collaboration between the foundation and health system — through 2036 and is estimated to allow 380 future students to participate in the program.
3. Jacksonville, Fla.-based Nemours Children's Health received a $7 million donation to fund its cancer research and support its music therapy program.
4. Rogers-based Mercy Northwest Arkansas received a $5 million gift from the Walmart Foundation to expand the hospital, including building a new interventional radiology suite. The new suite will provide advanced treatments to patients and will use the most up-to-date medical equipment.
5. More than 120 behavioral health staff at NYC Health + Hospitals will receive up to $75,000 in student debt relief thanks to a $5 million donation the New York City-based system received from Black Family Philanthropies.
6. Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va., received a $25 million gift to grow the health system's cancer program. The Carilion Taubman Cancer Center building will be constructed on Carilion's Riverside Campus in Roanoke and named in honor of the donors, former U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Taubman and his wife, Jenny Taubman.
