Hartford (Conn.) Hospital will unveil its $150 million Bone and Joint Institute Tuesday and begin offering surgeries in the coming month, Hartford Courant reports.
The 200,000-square-foot expansion comes as the hospital treats a growing older population with poor knees and hips. Jeffrey Flaks, president and COO of the hospital's parent company, Hartford HealthCare, said the bone and joint institute hopes to extend beyond Connecticut.
"There's only a handful in the country so … we had a vision to transform the way we can provide care. And we really do have a national ambition for what we've created," Mr. Flaks said.
Work on the building began in late 2014 to bring together surgery, rehabilitation and research at the institute. The building will have two halves attached by a skywalk. The institute's hospital will have eight operating rooms and 48 private patient rooms, with space for up to 60 rooms. The ambulatory center will house surgeons' office spaces and an auditorium for conference and classroom sessions, according to the report.
