Cleveland Clinic to demolish historic theater to build neuro institute

Cleveland Clinic plans to tear down the former building of the Cleveland Play House to make space for a 1-million-square-foot neurological institute on the system's main campus.

Cleveland Play House was founded in 1915 and was the first professional regional theater in the U.S., according to its website. It would cost about $40 million to repair the building, a Cleveland Clinic spokesperson told Becker's.

The neurological institute will have inpatient and outpatient care, imaging and surgical services and research laboratories, according to a May 13 Cleveland Clinic news release.

A surgery center will also be torn down for the project.
