Catholic Health to open $70M hospital

Catholic Health's $70 million neighborhood hospital in Lewiston, N.Y., will open its doors to patients Oct. 10, The Buffalo News reported.

Lockport Memorial Hospital will serve as a campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital, also in Lewiston. The 60,000-square-foot facility will contain an 18-bed emergency department and a 10-bed inpatient unit that can expand to 20 beds, along with diagnostic imaging and laboratory services. The hospital also includes medical offices for primary care, women's health and specialty care, which will open by the end of the month.

Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health, which ended 2022 with a $175 million operating loss, said the goal was to create a right-sized, sustainable hospital for the Lewiston community, according to the report. Catholic Health scaled down services at Mount St. Mary's Hospital in June, eliminating surgery, dialysis, imaging, maternity and gastrointestinal care.

The health system also opened a temporary emergency room this summer to ensure community members still had access to emergency care after Eastern Niagara Hospital closed June 17. The temporary ED will close Oct. 10 to coincide with the opening of the new hospital.
